New York City Marathon 2024 – Everything you need to know to run or cheer

On Sunday, November 5, 2023 The New York City Marathon will be run for its 52st time. The race is an annual marathon that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, and will have over 50,000 runners, over one million spectators, and 10,000 volunteers lining New York's streets!

Track all our runners here LIVE!

So why do you care? Because it's an absolutely incredible thing to see, and you're going to love every minute of it whether you're a runner or a spectator. If you're running, find out how to register your details with America Josh so we can build you a cheer squad!

The New York Marathon Course 2024

The 26.2 mile course travels through all five boroughs. The starting line is in Staten Island at the Western end of Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and participants run through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx before crossing the finish line in Central Park, just outside of Tavern on the Green. Take a look at the map with all the info on subway closures for the day here.

Because the race runs through all five boroughs of New York City you must know this: Travelling on Sunday is going to be incredibly difficult and there are many road and bridge closures. Plan ahead or you're going to be stuck for quite some time!

The attached map is a handy way to pick somewhere to watch from, or you can use the official guide to select a spot (I'll be on the Upper East Side on 1st and 65th)!

Things to know about the New York Marathon

There are LOTS of people who come out to watch the race so know that the track is going to be filled with people.

For that reason, people you may know running in the race might not be able to see you and you will miss them as they go by. To keep track, be sure to check out the live tracking of runners online and there is an official NYC Marathon app that can help you out as well available on iOS and Android.

With lots of people also comes lots of security so keep your head screwed on, don't be silly, and enjoy what should be a great fun day! High five, yell loud, be supportive… It's a long run for these (little-bit-nuts) runners!

Don't know anyone to cheer for in the NYC Marathon 2024?

If you don't know anyone in the race but want to cheer loud for someone, then cheer for these community runners (includes their bib number and target time):
