New York – Buying Australian Property From New York: A Free Seminar for Aussie Expats

A joint event between America Josh and our partners

Buying property back home from New York comes with three big questions. Should I buy at all? Can I get a loan while I’m earning in US dollars? And after this year’s budget, what happens to the tax when I sell?

On Tuesday, November 10, we’re bringing those questions to the American Australian Association for a free evening with the people who deal with them every day. America Josh is partnering with ODIN Mortgage & Tax and CORALA, and I’ll be in the room with them.

Property, lending and tax in one evening

Each speaker covers their own part of the puzzle, so you get the full picture in a single night. The topics:

  • Tax residency. Moving overseas doesn’t always settle your tax residency or your Australian property tax obligations.
  • Capital gains on a sale. How your residency history and the 2026 Federal Budget changes could affect your sale proceeds.
  • Borrowing as an expat. How lenders look at overseas income, deposits, equity and rates, and what’s available since HSBC stopped taking new applications.
  • Property you already own. The questions to ask before you hold, refinance, sell or draw on equity to buy again.
  • Choosing a location. Why location comes first, and how to compare areas using supply, demand, infrastructure investment and population growth.
  • New or established. The trade-offs of each, and what to check before buying from overseas.
  • The market right now. Rising rates, more stock and slower sales, and what the latest data says for expats who’ve been holding off.

For background on the tax side, my [summary of the 2026 Federal Budget for expats](LINK — federal budget article) covers the session I ran with Pau Lam earlier this year.

Who’s speaking in New York

Pau Lam, Director, Tax Services, ODIN Mortgage & Tax. Pau has spent more than 10 years helping Australian expats and overseas investors with Australian tax, including tax residency, property, CGT and returns. You might know him from our Expert Q&A on the 2026 budget.

Steven Lee, Director, Mortgage Services, ODIN Mortgage & Tax. Steven brings more than a decade of experience in Australian banking and mortgages, and now focuses on lending for Australian expats and overseas investors.

Paulo Velho, Head of Growth, CORALA. Paulo works with Australian expats in the US who want to buy property back home. He previously spent four and a half years in Real Estate Advisory at KPMG in Australia and the US, on property and infrastructure deals worth more than A$3 billion.

Josh Pugh, founder of America Josh. I’ll be hosting alongside them and catching up with as many of you as I can.

Stay for the Q&A and the conversations after

After the presentations, all four of us take questions from the floor. Then the night opens up for networking and one-on-one chats with the speakers, which is the best time to talk through your own situation.

Doors open with welcome drinks, so it’s worth arriving early.

Entry is free, but you’ll need to register.
