If you want to move to America, there's a good chance that finding a job in New York City is one part of your plan. Adriana at Career Contessa is here to help with her best tips and steps for finding a job in New York City from Australia:

Six weeks ago, I took the plunge and made the move from sunny Sydney, Australia to New York City.

I quit my job at home, tied up some loose ends with my startup, secured a twelve-month working visa, packed my bags, and off I went. Despite my love for Sydney, I was restless and seeking a new challenge in a completely new environment.

As the founder of an edu-tech startup, I’ve always had the flexibility to define my own schedule, time, and challenges. The daily hustle of an entrepreneur can sometimes seem daunting, but for me, it proved that no challenge is too big. Moving to a new city, with zero professional contacts, no social circle, and no guaranteed job didn’t seem too daunting—in fact, it made me feel invigorated.

My experience with hunting for jobs in New York has been worlds apart from any job hunt I’ve ever experienced. Like everything in New York, it’s more intense—and required an extra push to work for what I wanted. Which meant I needed to start with my personal network.

For those new to the job search, resources from Career Contessa are super useful. It’s essential to find targeted, practical information relevant to your desired opportunities (for me, tech jobs in NYC), and Career Contessa provided all this—and more. I found templates like how to set up an informational interview and how to write a cover letter especially useful, as they guide you on specific language and tone suitable for my the job market in 2018.
